Why architecture moves these markers

Not because you're an architect. Because of four specific things nine to eleven hours split between desk and site do to you.

Driver 01 Glucose availability

Sustained visual and spatial attention across nine to eleven hours draws on stable glucose supply, and the desk half of the day hides the cost. A missed meal during a site visit shows up as degraded decision quality two hours later at the screen, but the gap between cause and effect means it's attributed to fatigue rather than substrate. The brain uses roughly 120 grams of glucose a day, and that demand doesn't pause when you sit down.

Site work feels like outdoor exposure The counter-intuitive part: an architect spending two or three days a week on site, outdoors, in winter, synthesises almost no vitamin D β€” the same deficit as someone who never leaves the office. Excess vitamin D is fat-soluble and accumulates rather than clearing, and no self-reported estimate of site hours tells us where your status actually sits. This is the one marker we'd rather measure than estimate, which is why the component is flagged measure-preferred and why a winter baseline reading changes the recommendation.

Which markers, and when

Vitamin D in early winter β€” ideally November, before the steepest part of the decline β€” and fasting glucose if deadline compression is displacing meals predictably. Morning cortisol if the context-switching load is high and you want a read on accumulated stress rather than a guess. Retest at four to eight weeks if you're dosing vitamin D through winter, because the goal is correction followed by a spring decision about whether to continue, not indefinite supplementation. The retest is what turns a winter intervention into a loop instead of a guess that runs until the bottle empties.
